The introduction was replaced after some disagreement about what type of blog post this should have been, which led to the following alternative being agreed upon by all parties. Open-source design has long been an industry staple for digital design and engineering professionals, but it has only recently begun gaining traction outside engineering circles. We are creating a central repository of open-source design software to help beginners, business owners, students, and experienced professionals learn about open-source software. While most people would not use the word "epic" to describe a blog post the size of this one, it does tell you everything you need to know about why this post was written in the first place. However, once that's out of the way, I imagine there are many questions that arise when users discover they can alter their computer experience using free software. What can I do with these tools to make it worth the time? How do I get started? And, most importantly, how can I make sure my friends don't steal all of the credit for my work? One of the things that makes free software so powerful is its accessibility. Whether you are a left-handed guitar player or a right-handed dancer, open source software is designed for everyone. Learning how to use open source software requires less need for extra hardware and costly training or tutorials than ever before. There's an entire world of new and useful tools and capabilities awaiting students and professionals alike in open source design, and we sincerely hope this blog will help you explore them all.
